I am 16 years old and have been playing a number of different instruments for 10 years now, so I am quite an eperienced musician. I want to learn the trumpet but I am not sure whether to get a beginners trumpet or intermediate trumpet. I hope to be able to move on quickly with the trumpet so I want something that is the right standard and will last me a while. What is the best thing to get? Thanks
What is the best beginners trumpet for an epxerienced musician?
I recommend that you get a student line trumpet. They are easy to play and you can develop your chops. PLUS, if you just love it and want to play professionally, trade it in on an intermediate or pro model.
The best value, is to pick up a used student horn for maybe $300 or so.
I sell Yamaha horns, so of course, I'm biased towards their horns, but Bach, Getzen, Olds, and the like are all very similar in quality and playability.
There's a bunch of junk out there selling new for under $300 - well, you're experienced, you know that you get what you pay for.
Have fun with it!
Reply:Seriously, please don't listen to her advice... you'll waste your money! Student instruments play poorly and are harder to learn on. If you come to this question from a search engine DO NOT listen the best answer! I can't stress this enough! Report It
Reply:Here's the real deal..
Beginner instruments have about $40 worth of instrument in them.... not worth it.
For example:
$20 parts
$ 20 labor (if your lucky... most student instruments are made in sweat shops)
Music Instrument Distributor Buys it for $100
Your music store buys it for $180
Your music store sells it for $300 (specially marked down from $549 list!!!)
The Yamaha Beginner trumpet isn't all that bad, but for the price, I'd go used professional.
Intermediate instruments cost just as much as a used professional instrument, but aren't as well made and are a waste of money. Music Instrument Manufactures make intermediate instruments so they can make some extra bucks before the professional purchase.
So, if you're serious enough, look for a used professional horn and you'll be golden. If you've been playing music a while and will take care of your horn, there's nothing to lose. If you keep the horn in great condition, you'll be able to sell it for about what you bought it for...a student horn no way....
For a little extra green, you'll have a horn that will last, a horn that's well made and a horn you can resell
VS.
For a little less green, you'll have a horn that will lose it's soldering, a horn that will warp, a horn that will break that will need more repair then the cost of the horn (as the materials are so cheap!) a horn that doesn't play well and isn't that greatly in tune and you'll only be able to sell it back for $50-$100
However after saying all that, back in the day, students instruments weren't so bad. Look for an Old, Olds Ambassador or a Conn Constellation in good shape.. those horns were built tough. These horns also have decent resale value for their price... they'll be priced in between the used professional horns and the beginner trumpets. More often than not, you'll find one for under $125....
And I quote:
"At this point, with national markets available, I would buy an Olds Ambassador trumpet or cornet on eBay (search for "Olds Ambassador trumpet") for around $100 - 125 to start my kid on, unless I thought my kid would be significantly motivated by how shiny the horn is.
Olds made over a million brass instruments, but went out of business in 1979 or so. Their Ambassador line of student brass instruments was the best ever and there are many many of those horns still out there. I started on one myself and recently purchased one on eBay for my high school age daughter to use for marching band. These are great playing horns, often better than other companies' allegedly professional models, built to withstand all the rigors of the school band room, marching field, and street. They were built to be played at Armegedon. But these horns are not the prettiest things around at this point because even the newest ones are at least 20 years old and most were finished in lacquered brass and the lacquer has often at least partially worn away. Some of the more expensive (in this context that means over $125) eBay examples can, however, look pretty good and nearly new. Others are worn and in need of some repair and they often sell for under $50, but I wouldn't bother with those, unless you know pretty much what you are doing (which means you probably aren't reading this page). Look at the more expensive ones--they are essentially ready to go and the comparable new horn would be 3 to 4 times as expensive. But they may have some splotchy lacquer."
If you're lucky you'll find someone who doesn't know anything about the horns and sells it to you for 50 bucks...
If you go used professional look for an older (80's model) Bach Stradivarius. Don't buy a Stradivarius trumpet from the 90's to today, they're made very poorly.
Here are some other great professional trumpet makers
Kanstul
Shilke
Monet (although dude is a little arrogant)
Edwards
Good luck!

Transposing Piano music to B flat trumpet music?
I need to transpose music from piano music to B flat trumpet.
The piano music has a B flat and E flat as its key signature. How do I transpose this so I can play in the same key with my trumpet?
Transposing Piano music to B flat trumpet music?
You indicate that the piano music has a key signature of Bb and Eb which would put it in the key of Bb (two flats). The trumpet part would therefore be in the key of C.
All the notes for trumpet would be transposed up one step from the piano notes. So the piano Bb would be C for the trumpet, C would transpose to D, D up to E, piano Eb would be trumpet F, F to G, G to A, A to B, etc.
Musician, composer, teacher.
Reply:I was wrong! Bearcat is right!
You are in Bb (or gm, but nevermind that for now) because of the Bb and Eb in the key signature. When you read C on your (transposed) music your instrument sounds a Bb. Therefore you want to have your music in C, a whole step higher than the key in the music (I had it lower earlier because I was transposing backwards. How embarassing...)

Reply:For a Bb trumpet, this piece use C major as the written key (no sharps/flats). Take everything in the piano part and write it a whole step higher.

My trumpet is clogged up?
i have a trumpet, and somehow it got clogged. i pulled the valves out to clean them and then put them back in and locked them and now i cannot do so much as to blow any air through the trumpet. all the valves are in the correct place, all are assembled together correctly, and all are locked in to the correct place. what seems to be the problem here? any suggestions on how to fix it?
My trumpet is clogged up?
When you cleaned the valves, did you take them apart? If you took them totally apart, you may have put the valve locks back in the valves backwards. If you did not take them apart and only washed off the bottom part, then you may have put the valves in with the locks 180 degrees off from where they need to be. Some trumpets have valves that seem to be locked in position when they are actually halfway around the wrong way. The other option would be that the valves are in the wrong casings. If your valves don't have numbers on them, then pull out the slides and look down them. This is easiest to do on the 2nd valve. Then press down the 2nd valve while looking into where the slide used to be. The holes on the valve will line up with the holes on the trumpet. If they don't, then they are either in the wrong casing or they are turned the wrong way.
I hope that is all that's wrong.
Reply:do u clean it? if not BLOW as hard as u can!!! Its probably spit!! or it could be food try cleaning it. if u are in grade school u probably have the same problem as me i have band right after lunch so food gets in my instrument and i have 2 clean it like ALL the time. :P
Reply:idk much about trumpets cause i don't really use mine but try running a string through it (take out the values) or a pipe cleaner. hold open the spit valves to see how far the air does get.
if you can't find anything take it to a music shop and have them clean it and give it an acid bath.
Reply:Take it to a shop.
Or get a branded cleaner or brush. There is lots of stuff to fix stuff like this.

Reply:There is a trumpet snake that you can use that would be available at a good music store. Sometimes they can get clogged when they haven't been cleaned for awhile. Once ever 6 months you should be submersing the entire horn in mild soapy water for approximately 30 minutes. This helps eliviate build up inside the horn. Also you may have a valve installed backwards.
Reply:Im not certain you got those valves in the right order, or position. if the passage holes are a quarter turn off they would block the air flow.
On the other hand, maybe you lost your gum down the mouthpiece without knowing it - use a flexible tube brush to clean.
Reply:check the numbers to your valves, maybe one is in three, or three is in two, or something like that.

Free trumpet sheets?

preferably only like movie and video game themes

i just want free trumpet sheets from that type

Hey! I play the trumpet! :)
Unfortunately I don't know any good online music for the trumpet. But search for clarinet music since clarinets are in the same concert key and both instruments play the same notes....
you could also try trombone... I believe they play in the same concert key as well. Hope this helped!
Good luck - peace :)

New Trumpet?
Hey all, i'm nearing high school, and i'm looking for a professional grade trumpet, and i was looking for suggestions. I'm looking at a standard shcilke Bb trumpet, and a B%26amp;S, but i'm not sure. So i'm going to let you tell me.
New Trumpet?
As a long-time trumpet player, I will try to help. Bach Stradivarius are at the top of the line. Conn makes great horns, too. If you have a fair amount of money to use, I had the pleasure of plating a Conn Constelation for three months! AWESOME!
Here is the best hint I can give you: DON'T just go and buy a new horn. Play it - for at least 30 minutes, to try it out. (Remember, a horn has to "warm up", just like you do!)
It's all about trial and error, and finding one that is right for YOU! I wish you the best of luck!
Reply:Yeah, i have a Conn corrently, but it's a 1972 model, so it doesn't play as well as i'd like it to. Report It
Reply:Nearing high school, does that mean like 8th grade? I would wait a couple years before buying a top-end custom trumpet, as they are a huge investment. I bought a Conn Connstellation in the fall of Freshman year and still have it. I am now a junior who is going into music-ed and purchased a Schike S22L. I think entering high school is a little too early to spend that much money on a Custom Horn. If you are planing to go into music, as a career then I would consider it down the road but if you're not then Conn makes great professional instruments for way less money. My Conn was like $2500.00 less than my Schilke and its still a great instrument.
Reply:Home boy is right! I have been playing the trumpet for 9 years and I thought my self how to play. When i first bought my cornet it was hard to play. Keep trying OK
Reply:As a band director, I recommend the Bach 180-43g trumpet. This horn is great for the budding professional. The link below will lead you to a 45 day trial period, no tax, and financing if you need it.
I refer this link to ALL of my trumpet students.

You can also enter in other varitions of 180-43 S (silver) or just 180-43 (lacquer)
Good luck.

Rock song with trumpet?
What hard rock songs or bands (like Guns N' Roses or AC/DC) have a trumpet playing as well?
Rock song with trumpet?
Aerosmith uses trumpets alot. Next time your on itunes i recommend you get a song called "Time is Now" by Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band (yes I know), but it got some great rock riffs and awesome trumpet/saxophone parts.
Reply:aerosmith use harmonica a lot, not the trumpet, i am pretty sure...
lots of red hot chili peppers early songs have the trumpet, but sorry i cant recollect actual song titles, just do a little research on their early albums, i'm sure you'll like them...but then they're not hard rock!
Reply:I heard a song by an Indie rock/British band (Kasabian) called the Doberman and towards the end of the song they had a trumpet playing. It was the STUPIDEST thing I ever heard, it didn't even go well with song it sounded like a Mexican/ western song!! lol
