My son is learning how to play the trumpet. We've noticed in the books that several of the notes are played that same way. I don't understand that. The G and C are played the same. Is it just a limitation of the trumpet or are we missing something?

No, the G and the C have the same fingering. The way you make the different pitches is by adjusting your lips. On brass instruments you can play higher notes by tightening your lips. I would highly recommend that you your son take private lessons, it's the best way to learn.
