I'm starting high school and I need a trumpet. I've been looking online and I pretty much freaked at how many different kinds of trumpets it said there were!!! My goal is to get something inexpensive that will last me awhile.
Some questions I have....
Do I need one that says B flat as opposed to A flat etc?
What makes a student trumpet different from a normal one?
What brands would you, the answerer, reccomend?
What kind of trumpet should I get?
Definitely buy a trumpet pitched in B-Flat, but as for make and model here are some guidelines:
- If you see yourself playing this instrument after high school and on into college then find a way to increase your budget and buy a professional model instrument.
-If you consider yourself a very good musician and get a lot of first trumpet parts in the band then at least go for an intermediate model trumpet.
- In both cases, look for an instrument with a built in third valve slide finger hook, and if possible a first valve slide hook as well so that you can better adjust for intonation on specific notes.
- Silver plated trumpets are more and more the norm and most people like the sound better. If you are going to be doing marching band consider keeping your old trumpet so that you don't dent up your new one.
-Good manufacturers are Bach, Yamaha, and Besson.
Reply:These guys have really got it down, but another thing that you may want to consider is what type of mouth piece you are getting with it. I would recomend a Bach or Blessing for best tone quality, and don't get plastic ones. Also, if you are just starting to play (as it sounds) start with a 7C mouthpiece, untill you start playing above G and round double C. Then get 5C or a 3.
Reply:Maestro's got it right. Another less expensive, but good brand, to look into is Getzen. In high school, I had a Getzen for marching band, and a Bach Strad for concert band.
Reply:Well first of all the standard trumpet is the B-flat trumpet, so you'll probbably want to go with that. A student trumpet doesn't have as good of a quality as other trumpets, so you probably won't want to get one. Yes, they are cheaper, but they don't have a good quality. I presonally have a Yamaha Xeno, it's a really good trumpet, and I got it used and it plays just like as if it were new and it's about 4 years old. What is your price range? I would recomend going to your local music store and have them point you in the right direction and from there you can try them out and find out which ones you like better and stuff like that. If you need any more help you can email me. Hope this helps, and good luck on finding a new trumpet!
