Anyone play the trumpet after having tonsils out?

I am having my tonsils out in April. I play trumpet professionally and wonder how long it will be before I can play again. Any trumpet players out there who had their tonsils out? How long till I will be able to play again and will I need to adjust my air flow?

I tried to play trombone for a band concert 5 days after my tonsilectomy. It didn't work so well, sounded bad, hurt bad, and I ended up not playing.





I'd say after two weeks you'd be fine. My recovery was really slow, and I could eat without a lot of pain after 10 days. One thing I can tell you is that movement of the soft pallate is severly restricted for a while, and that might cause some problems.
Reply:Because you do use some throat muscles to play it might be a couple of weeks. I would let your doctor know that you play the trumpet, and ask him how long it should take to heal. You don't want to break open the stitches from playing. When I had my wisdom teeth out it was about a week till I could start playing my flute again, and then they suggested for only short periods each day for about a week.
Reply:I believe that is an answer your doctor should have. There is no reason I can see why that would cause you to stop playing the trumpet. What does having, or not having tonsils do with playing trumpet? Don't you play with your lips? Just ask your doctor.
