So I've been playing trumpet for seven years now and I think I've hit a plateau. I currently play on a Conn Vintage One and Bach 1 1/2 C mouthpiece, (I also have a 5C). I'm having this problem hitting high notes. I can play up to an A above the staff quite fluently without much trouble. Above that I can usually get out a C or sometimes D-Eb. Problem is, I get this pain whenever I play in this register. Its occasionally behind my ear on my neck or deep inside my head. It usually happens when my head "pressurizes" and the blood rushes out of my head. For my embouchure I'm i usually curl my bottom lip over my teeth but I'm trying to correct it. I think I'm also pushing to hard and maybe squeezing my throat. Is there anyone out there who can give me advice on how to make this pain stop and how to go higher, or how to practice correctly? I'm taking private lessons, I'm in a college classical wind ensemble and my high school jazz band so I'm hoping my chops will improve eventually
Trumpet High Notes-Pain, Equipment and Technique?
I'm a trumpet player and ive been playing for about 5 years now, im working on hitting my D's and E's.. You can work on playing your scaled two octaves, that works for some ppl.
my technique is the start on a middle staff G and play up in half steps and hold each note out for 8 counts and play the notes with the best tone you have.. when your tone starts getting ugly then just stop playing and put your horn up. it has been working for me very well... umm the pains are probably from you straining to play high note, so just relax when you play. I hope i help!!
Reply:The key to playing higher is through practicing various "lip slurs" - ask your teacher to give you some lip-slur exercises to play ... if your teacher doens't have any, do a google search and you should find some.
Reply:do alot of scales, 2 octave chromatic scales, and slurs(have one fingering and make the pitch go up and down). and for the pain. well have you tryed taking medicine?and are you using the 1 1/2 c or the 5 c? if your using the 1 1/2 c that migh be the cuase of the problem cuz its hard to blow in those things, so you have to blow more. that cuases a lack of oxygen to get to your brain cuasing the pain. and stress might have something to do with it. if your neck gets all tense that cuases pain too.
