Ok this season for marching band i played trumpet and next year i will be lead section leader. But after this season i started playing tuba for school.Ive found that i can barely play trumpet anymore. So what should i do for next season. How can i get real good at trumpet while still playing tuba or if thats to hard should i just switch to tuba.Which im not real good at.
Ok i play trumpet for marching band and...?
Depends on your personal preference. If you want to play trumpet just in order to be section leader, then do not play that instrument. If you want to play trumpet in order to better the organization you play for, then do that. Since the mouthpieces are so different it can be very difficult to adjust if you're not used to playing many different instruments. Practice both each day in order to try getting used to the adjustment. You'll get used to it eventually.
Reply:The tuba mouthpiece is much larger than a trumpet mouthpiece.
So the embouchure is much larger with the tuba so your muscles are not squeezing your lips as tight. To keep you chops with the trumpet you will have to continue to practice with a trumpet mouthpiece, if not a full trumpet.
Reply:You have to keep your trumpet practice up, because your embouchure is getting out of shape. I would really suggest getting into private lessons even once a month just to keep your trumpet playing honest. You never will regret it.
I teach band.
Reply:Just practice them both a lot. Don't play just one or the other.
Reply:Trying to play both will probably be a losing proposition. Very few people can play both well at the same time. I was briefly in a situation where I had to play trombone and it toasted my trumpet embrouchure. It took me more than 6 months to recover after playing trombone for only 3 months. So pick one or the other and stick with it.
